Ya spotted this on gamers gate for 2450 blue coins or something. Which was exactly what I had in those wiedo things.
So picked it up on a whim. Its not a tank or flight sim =( BUT ITS A SIM =). So now attempting to figure out the must have mods.
The hydro fix seems quite important but never had to hex edit anything in my life. So this will sit until I feel brave enough.- 05/24/13 03:36 AM Re: Silent Hunter 5.Joined: Dec 2011Posts: 3,740Senior MemberSenior MemberJoined: Dec 2011Posts: 3,740. Currently playing vanilla.
Never played anything in series. I think its a good little game. BUT any guides on plotting torpedo attacks or the scale of binos and parascopes to determine range? My 1st attack against a destroyer did not go so well. 5 shots zero hits. Was within 3km in a perfect position. Just set up my shots ALL WRONG.
DId not help it spotted my pedios and increased speed from 10 knots to 18. Merchants I have just been blowing them up with the deck gun. So far none as been armed. The included PDF manual was pretty basic and bad. Ingame help was set up for silly auto track arcade crap. And HOW the heck to get the stop watch up on screen. Seems like you need that thing to determine speed with optics and whatever the heck the scales are set to?- 05/24/13 12:32 PM Re: Silent Hunter 5.Joined: Apr 2008Posts: 10,191VeteranVeteranJoined: Apr 2008Posts: 10,191. Flashburn,I suggest you check out the wealth of tutorials on youtube, they helped me greatly when I first started playing the series. What was good for acquiring firing solutions etc in SH III was good for IV and V,the maths is the same but I see you are new to this sim.I can't really help you because I never really played the out-of-the-box vanilla version. It sucked.Ok took your advise.
Watched U tooobe videos of both 4 and 5. NOW I see why people are pissed about 5. Was dumbed down alot.
I may just go get sh4 and save sh5 + mods for later. Still as just walking into the series 5 is not that bad. BUT if after more OOPFH in a sim is lacking a BUNCH of needed stuff out of the box. The torpedo systems of sh5 are really game land stuff indeed. Gre vocabulary list pdf. If wanting legit deal not so good.- 06/13/13 02:58 PM Re: Silent Hunter 5.Joined: Oct 1999Posts: 15,560I Fought DiabloI Fought DiabloVeteranJoined: Oct 1999Posts: 15,560.

Hag, SH4 with TMO and RSRD (I also use Natural Sinking Mechanics, which makes the ships sink MUCH more realistically) is pretty much the end all be all of US WWII naval simulation. The fact that you can look up basically any half major naval engagement on wikipedia and have it almost 1 for 1 recreated in game is great.I just participated in the Battle of Midway and the correct task forces were going where they did, and I also noticed during the Guadalcanal campaign they even made the Japanese switch to night time destroyer convoys for troop resupply.I have no real desire to play as a German uboat sinking allied ships, but for 10 bucks combined with the eye candy and some select mods to fix all the shortcomings I see I think it'll be pretty fun when I pick it up. Silent Hunter games always have gamey features that need fixing (inaccurate shipping lanes, arcadey aircraft, ships sinking in massive explosions in minutes, insanely powerful deck guns, etc).
Subsim.com is exactly where you need to go to get these games modded into real classics. Sh4 i will certainly pick up in the future. But I must say coming into series with sh5 and the 1.20 patch I do see small issues but am having fun with it I must say. Since I finally figured out manual tdc (more or less) and the sometimes bizzare interface (it works but could be layed out a bit better), well I like it. I have DL a bunch of promising mods but still have not installed yet.Wish you could command a corvette or something.- 06/18/13 12:16 PM Re: Silent Hunter 5.Joined: Oct 2011Posts: 200MemberMemberJoined: Oct 2011Posts: 200. IIRC the SH5 '1.0' didn't even had a compass on the top of the screen!Concerning the corvette, SH4 has some ship mods (and maybe even SH5 - I need to check out the forums again). I wish there was a startegy game (just like jutland) using the SH4-5 engine, that would be awesome!- 06/18/13 04:44 PM Re: Silent Hunter 5.Joined: Mar 2001Posts: 7,335HotshotHotshotJoined: Mar 2001Posts: 7,335. Well just installed a few mods to SH5 finally. I was going to after I finished total Germany, but I guess 1/2 thru happy times will do. But why the hell is my sub so near impossible to kill.
I should not be able to survive taking on 2 destrpyers on the surface LOL. Or how I just got nailed by a torpedo from a torpedo bomber and somehow the sub is fine. Oh and then the stupid plane crashed into the conning tower and everything is fine? LOL.- 06/25/13 12:32 PM Re: Silent Hunter 5.Joined: Dec 2011Posts: 3,740Senior MemberSenior MemberJoined: Dec 2011Posts: 3,740.
OK what gives. I just ran across a British sub on the surface just north on Tripoli. I hit the bugger with 2 out of a 4 torpedo spread and DID not kill this thing? I also reloaded from a save and found him again and unloaded the deck gun on him.
Submarine Simulator Games
He just dived and went on his merry way. So I guess all subs are next to impossible to kill in this silly game?
But I sunk 2 QE battle ship types 30 minutes before this encounter (real world time lol) with 2 and 1 torpedo respectably. Some merchants I have had to freaken fire 3 or 4 to sink. OR just one well placed one. I can live with that BUT NO SUB on earth could take 2 torpedo hits and DIVE!But I am not going to lie. Even with some odd things here and there it is overall good game with mods.
Even without it really is not bad. Just better modded up. Still have 3 more campaigns in the campaign arc I am on. Then I think I certainly will pick up SH4.
On the 1st MEd campaign now. I am really hating British aircraft at this moment. But operating under German and Italian air power is GREAT over all.
Radio the BDU and tens of minutes later air craft all over the place bombing shipping. Great to make escape after blowing up BIG stuff. Well some screens of my now SH5 with 4 mods running. Best under 3 bucks on a game I have probably spent.Current mods run. Open horizons 2 (full version with a bunch of new ships), new ui tdw (returned functionally PLUS from older SH series, irai (MASSIVE AI improvement) and something pretty for nice harbors full of pretty things which I can not remember right now. And it looks like the new ui one will be getting a working sextant? Ok to hard core for me.
LOL.I am not going to lie. With mods this pretty good.
In fact has MASSIVLY eaten into my making crap time. I also ended up buying sh4 on gamers gate summer sale. As to WHY on earth game developers never allow the player to control recon assets in any game it seems floors me. BIG pet peave of mine. In sh5 is such a HUGE world and yet you can not command anything but your sub.
Not even a bunch of subs.
